Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır emphasized that the Turkish iron and steel industry has an annual production capacity of 60 million tons and stated that the industry has an important position worldwide with its production capacity, production quantity and product quality. “We are the second largest steel producer in Europe and the eighth largest in the world. In the first seven months of this year, when world crude steel production decreased by 0.7 percent, we managed to increase our production by 14.9 percent.”
Minister Kacır opened the ANKIROS 16th International Iron and Steel, Casting, Non-Ferrous Metallurgy Technologies, Machinery and Products Specialized Fair and stated that it is of great importance that more than 1,100 domestic and foreign exhibitors as well as the iron and steel and casting sectors of our country come together.
Strong Industry, Strong Turkey: Spanning a wide range from automotive to construction, from chemicals to machinery production, from energy to rail systems, the metal industry is one of the best representatives of the vision of “strong industry, strong Turkey”.
Annual Production of 60 Million Tons: With an annual production capacity of 60 million tons, the Turkish iron and steel industry is in an important position worldwide. We are the second largest steel producer in Europe and the eighth largest in the world. Although world crude steel production decreased by 0.7 percent in the first seven months of this year, we managed to increase our production by 14.9 percent.
Success in the Foundry Sector: The foundry sector, which is our source of pride within the metal industry, is above world standards with its production technology and quality. While the foundry sector supplies products in many fields such as automotive, white goods, machinery, agriculture and construction, it also provides employment to 70 thousand citizens.
Proud Achievements: The appropriate steps we took in the supply chain, which was reshaped after the pandemic, further increased the success of our industry. Turkey is the second largest metal casting producer in Europe and the seventh largest in the world. Our industry is also a source of pride with its high-level precision castings and works that require engineering studies and R&D. With over 7 billion dollars of exports, the metal casting industry is among our leading sectors in development.
Global Competitiveness: As the Ministry of Industry and Technology, we act with a national mobilization spirit to increase the global competitiveness and export capability of our metal industry. We continue to rapidly implement the necessary support programs to move our metal industry to the position it deserves in the world.
Transformation in the Metal Industry: Global trends show that the metal industry is on the verge of significant changes. Issues such as sustainability, continuity, digital and green transformation will be the determinants of long-term success in our industry. Clean production is at the forefront, and policies to combat climate change are gaining momentum.
Green Transformation and Investments: The relationship between climate change and industrial and technology policies is strengthening. In line with our Turkey Century goals, realizing green transformation investments in line with the 2053 net zero emission targets is becoming a critical imperative to establish a sustainable and environmentally friendly production infrastructure.
Investment Need: We have prepared Low Carbon Roadmaps for the locomotive sectors such as aluminum, steel, fertilizer and cement. Within the scope of 2053 net zero emission targets, a total investment need of 71 billion dollars is foreseen for the compliance of existing facilities and decarbonization of new capacities in these four sectors.
Domestic and National Production: Increasing the production of qualified steels such as stainless steel, silicon steel, abrasion resistant steels and tool steels in our country is among our priorities for the future of our metal industry. For a strong industrial development, we rely on value-added, domestic and national production.
